The Dynamics of Advertising (Paperback): Jackie Botterill, Iain MacRury, Barry Richards The Dynamics of Advertising (Paperback)
Jackie Botterill, Iain MacRury, Barry Richards
R1,689 Discovery Miles 16 890 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This study serves three major aims: the first is to provide a thorough and critical review of the now extensive literature on advertising in sociology and cultural studies; the second is to present the major results of research conducted by the authors at the Centre for Advertising Studies at the University of East London, in which changes in advertisment content over the last 50 years have been analyzed; the third aim is to develop a method for the psychosocial study of all forms of public communication, and of other aspects of everyday life, which brings together an understanding of contemporary cultural change with a sensitivity to the profound forces at work within the individual. The authors suggest that advertisements, while important in our daily emotional self-management, are far more closely linked to the pragmatics of everyday life than their symbolic richness might suggest. Trends in advertisement content point to an important shift in our relationship to goods that reflects an increasing preoccupation with risk management.

What Holds Us Together - Popular Culture and Social Cohesion (Hardcover): Barry Richards What Holds Us Together - Popular Culture and Social Cohesion (Hardcover)
Barry Richards
R3,980 Discovery Miles 39 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Faced by the increasing divisiveness and volatility of electoral politics, and the rise of illiberal fundamentalisms, the social sciences may seem to lack the imagination necessary to make sense of the world. In this unusual book of political psychology, based on the idea that we hold ourselves together through a combination of restraint and release, the author draws on psychoanalysis and its creative interpretations of everyday experience to consider the current malaise of politics in relation to the huge vitality of popular culture. In a wide-ranging analysis, that links topics as diverse as our experience of public utilities, the rise of counselling, and the weakened impact of sexual scandal, he concludes with the proposal that a reconstruction of nationalism could make an important contribution to the renewal of democratic politics.

Atmosphere, Weather and Climate (Hardcover, 9): Roger G. Barry, Richard J. Chorley Atmosphere, Weather and Climate (Hardcover, 9)
Roger G. Barry, Richard J. Chorley
R5,684 Discovery Miles 56 840 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

This book presents a comprehensive introduction to weather processes and climatic conditions around the world, their observed variability and changes, and projected future trends. Extensively revised and updated, this ninth edition retains its tried and tested structure while incorporating recent advances in the field. From clear explanations of the basic physical and chemical principles of the atmosphere, to descriptions of regional climates and their changes, the book presents a comprehensive coverage of global meteorology and climatology. In this new edition the latest scientific ideas are again expressed in a clear, non-mathematical matter.

New features include:

  • extended and updated treatment of atmospheric models
  • final chapter on climate variability and change has been completely rewritten to take account of the IPCC 2007 scientific assessment.
  • new four-colour text design featuring over 30 colour plates
  • over 360 diagrams have been redrawn in full colour to improve clarity and aid understanding.

Atmosphere, Weather and Climate continues to be an indispensable source for all those studying the earth s atmosphere and world climate, whether from environmental and earth sciences, geography, ecology, agriculture, hydrology, or related disciplinary perspectives. Its pedagogic value is enhanced by several features: learning points at the opening of each chapter and discussion topics at their ending, boxes on topical subjects and on twentieth century advances in the field.

Steffen Kruger, Karl Figlio, Barry Richards
R3,721 Discovery Miles 37 210 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

This book offers a psychosocial perspective on political violence, employing a strong current of psychoanalytic thinking. In the course of its chapters an international roster of researchers and scholars offers a richly complex and insightful view of diverse forms of political violence and its build-ups. The authors discuss the processes by which the ground for political violence is prepared, and how violent acts are facilitated. They question how social, cultural and political constellations can develop in such a way that, for certain people in this constellation, violence becomes a logical - perversely reasonable - response. This collection demonstrates what a psychoanalytic perspective can bring to existing approaches to political violence, going beyond the social movement approach by unfolding the inherent ambiguity in accepted concepts within the study of political violence.

The Psychology of Politics (Paperback): Barry Richards The Psychology of Politics (Paperback)
Barry Richards
R440 Discovery Miles 4 400 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

How do some political leaders capture popular support? What is the appeal of belonging to a nation? Can democracy thrive? The Psychology of Politics explores how the emotions which underpin everyday life are also vital in what happens on the political stage. It draws on psychoanalytic ideas to show how fear and passion shape the political sphere in our changing societies and cultures, and examines topical social issues and events including Brexit, the changing nature of democracy, activism, and Trump in America. In a changing global political climate, The Psychology of Politics shows us how we can make sense of what drives human conduct in relation to political ideas and action.

What Holds Us Together - Popular Culture and Social Cohesion (Paperback): Barry Richards What Holds Us Together - Popular Culture and Social Cohesion (Paperback)
Barry Richards
R826 Discovery Miles 8 260 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Has the unifying power of mass forms of popular culture been undermined by the cultural pluralism of a globalised world? This book suggests not, because at the heart of some key areas of popular culture is a simple celebration of our condition as members of human society. This offers opportunities for a widely shared experience of containment, of having the anxieties of existence tempered by the fact of belonging. And globalisation brings greater reach for the containing forms of contemporary popular culture, which appeal across the deep divides of faith, ethnicity, class and gender. In a series of case studies, the book explores the emotional underpinnings of three major pillars of popular culture, in consumption, sport, and music. Its core idea is that the pleasures of popular culture are at their strongest and best when they confirm our sense of belonging in the containing matrix of the social. Despite the constraint and disappointment inevitably involved in subjection to a social order, the reconciliation with authority which it brings is vital for the containment of the anxieties with which we all struggle.Popular culture is both libidinal and rule-bound; in psychoanalytic language, it brings pleasure in the context of an encounter with the 'loving and beloved superego' (Schafer).

R3,280 Discovery Miles 32 800 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Trypanosomes cause medically and economically severe diseases such as Sleeping Sickness and Chagas' Disease in humans and Nagana in cattle. They are also inherently interesting scientifically, being single-cell eukaryotes under constant, strong diversifying selection. The publication of the genome sequences of two key trypanosomes, Trypanosoma brucei and Trypanosoma cruzi, in 2005 has provided an exciting new resource to improve our understanding of the molecular and cellular biology of these important parasites and aid the development of new drugs and vaccines. The genome sequences, allied with useful genetic tools and easy molecular manipulation, will consolidate T. brucei as a eukaryotic model organism. As a model, it has the added advantage that studies in this area are directly applicable to understanding and prevention of disease. Research in this area has never been more exciting. In this book international experts review the contribution of trypanosome research to our understanding of eukaryote biology. Chapters are written from a molecular and genomic perspective and contain speculative models upon which to base future research efforts. Topics include: The genome of T. brucei, reverse and forward genetics, genetic exchange between trypanosomes, chromosome structure and dynamics, DNA replication, recombination and repair, transcription, post-transcriptional control of gene expression, cell structure, cell division and cell cycle, intracellular transport systems, cell surface architecture, antigenic variation, and comparative genomics of metabolism. The book provides an important resource summarising our current knowledge of trypanosome molecular and cellular biology.
